My shoulders and triceps are feeling yesterday. Last night my legs felt fatigued and I was tired in general. Didn’t seem to sleep great, but I’m also feeling tired today. Went to the 4pm class.
- 250m Row
- 10 PVC Pass Thrus
- 10 PVC OHS
- 10 KB Glute Bridges (35#)
- 20s Handstand Hold
I started with a squat snatch until 165 when I started to power it and then do the squats. We were supposed to stay with a weight for the last five sets, but I failed the last rep of the 2nd set of those. Whoops! Didn’t realize my back was so tight from yesterday until getting into these lifts.
- 30 Ball Slams (30#)
- 20 Bear Hug Lunges (30#)
Was really dreading 150 ball slams with tired shoulders. After two rounds I settled in (or went numb?) and tried to chase down Michelle and Kyle by not resting at all between movements the rest of the way. Finished in 9:47.
Had planned these muscle-ups well before knowing what today’s workout would be. A fatigued state is a good time to work on shit like this though. Makes it easier in the middle of a workout. I think the last time I tried a max sets of muscle-ups was 2015 and I’ve been stuck on a PR of 9 since doing it a couple of times that year. I was confident I could break finally get double digits, but wasn’t convinced it was going to happen after the type of workout I just finished. I did give myself 15-20 minutes to recover though.
E3M – 4 Sets
My first few reps were all over the place before I found my swing; then I felt good. Got 10 finally and didn’t use my hips enough for the 11th. Shit like that happens when I focus on a specific number so much. Curious what I can do fresh. My other sets felt good as well and I made sure to use my hips through all of them. Surprised myself by not decreasing too much. I ended up with 10-7-6-6.
There is a storm rolling in overnight, so tomorrow will be a garage workout or maybe a rest day if I need it.
Went out to a Brazilian steakhouse last night and ate so much meat that I still felt full this morning. I knew I needed the carbs though so I powered through my Sunday pancakes.
- Bottom Squat Hold
- Dead Hang
- Various barbell reps
- 10 Shoulder Presses (115#)
- 15 Overhead Squats
- 20 Push Presses
- 25 Front Squats
- 30 Push Jerks
- 35 Back Squats
I definitely have a love/hate for this workout. I love the beauty of its design and effectiveness, but I really hate the mental battle during the workout.
My strength is down, but my cardio seems to be up, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I started with 8 presses. Then did 2 presses, put it on my back for a grip reset, and 10 overhead squats. Then 5 OHS and dropped it for a quick breather instead of trying a fancy grip reset. I think I did 12 push presses, then 8 plus 5 front squats. Two sets of 10 front squats with 5 push jerks tacked on to the 2nd set. The push jerks seemed much harder than they should have been and I think I went 7-5-6-7 for the rest of them. I didn’t stop on the back squats, but they were pretty slow. Finished in 10:07 to keep the PR streak going on this one. Really happy with the effort.
- 4/15/2013 – 14:03
- 7/21/2014 – 13:34
- 9/3/2015 – 10:33
- 2/10/2019 – 10:07
I programmed an 8:00 rest before starting a bodyweight metcon.
- 7 Burpees
- 7 Knees to Elbows
This felt much worse than I was expecting. It seems like I always say that when K2E are involved; I’d rather do toes to bars. All the shoulder fatigue really carried over to the burpees. Took me 8:59 to get done. Wouldn’t mind trying this one again sometime when I’m fresh, especially since I got it from the BTWB Bodyweight Fitness Level workouts.
Stacked Plate Passes
The five of us lined up and passed plates down the line and then back. We went through it three times rotating positions to make sure everyone sat on the end at least once. I took double duty. The plate stack was 10-10-15-25-10-25-15-10-10.
Worked on my balance and handstand walking. Shoulders were very fatigued, but that’s some of the best time to work on it if you ask me. I think I just need to get away from the wall and get on the open floor because I’m probably adjusting knowing that I have the wall coming up since I’m only doing a few steps out.
My shoulders felt a few tugs in bed last night, but no issues today. Went to the 4pm class.
- 2 Sets
- 20 Jumping Jacks
- 10 Arm Circles Forward
- 10 Arm Circles Backward
- 10 Arm Crosses
- 3 Sets
- 100m Run
- 10 PVC Passes
- 10 Behind Neck Wide Grip Push Press (45#)
- 3 Sets
- 1,200m Assault Bike
- 15 Overhead Squats (95#)
Winter version of “Nancy” for us here in Michigan, though most everyone did 500m rows. I figured the AB and OHS combo would blow up my quads and right away in the first set of squats I broke, doing 9-6. Continued that until I did the last 15 unbroken. I should have fought to do them all unbroken and recovered on the bike. I guess I was the Nancy today. I probably averaged around 60 RPM and was dipping under that in the last two rounds. Finished in 15:56, which is about 30 seconds faster than my time with the 400m runs this summer when I did all of the squats unbroken.
For some reason I originally recorded 16:56. When I saw my friend’s time on the whiteboard only 20 seconds off mine and knowing I beat him by over a minute, I remembered pushing to get those final reps done under 16 minutes. Now I feel better about my effort. That’s what happens when I don’t have my notebook on the floor and record it right away!
We had plenty of time again, so I pulled out a barbell. The NCFit programming is cutting back on the strength work a bit to focus on conditioning with the Open coming up.
All sets with a neutral grip.
Wow, what a week! On Monday afternoon, after shoveling, I started to feel weak and tired. Was still a little off on Tuesday. When I woke up on Wednesday I could tell it was worse. Great way to turn 39! After the 2.5 hour drive home I felt like total shit. Thursday and Friday were worse and pretty much all day was on the couch with an average of over 10 hours each night in bed, not counting naps. I finally was feeling better on Saturday and did a bunch of stuff in my workshop but didn’t seem like I had enough energy for a workout. This morning I was feeling something odd, but different that the previous days. Wasn’t quite sure about going to the gym. I made it in at noon for open gym though. Those four days off are probably the longest streak without exercise in several years.
All close grip and even with the last set my index finger was only out to the last knurl ring. Usually I’m all the way up to the collars of the bar. My shoulders felt pretty solid, especially for the close grip. Legs felt extremely weak though.
- 20 Sit-ups
- 15/12 cal Row
- 15 Hand Release Push-ups
- 10 DB Box Step Overs (24″, 25# DBs)
I definitely planned to just cruise though this. After I got through 3 rounds I knew I was ok and picked up the pace getting faster each round. My average was probably a little under 1,100 cal/hour on the rower, except for the last two times. Today I went 8-7 on every set of push-ups instead of my usual 3×5 for something like this. Found a nice turning rhythm on the box and it was nice to use a light weight. Finished 9+10. Felt really good to go through that.
I’m going to try some new nutrition stuff to start the year and posted about it over on nick.blog.
Feeling beat from the week and my back is tight from more squats yesterday. Not happy about having to set an alarm to make it for the 9am class, but will be out-of-town for a few days.
- 2 Rounds
- 5 Strict Pull-ups
- 10 Hand Release Push-ups
- 15 Air Squats
- 400m Row
- 3 Rounds
- 5 Strict Pull-ups
- 10 Hard Release Push-ups
- 15 Air Squats
Also did some random thrusters, cleans, snatches, and OHS with 45 and 95 pounds.
12 Days of Christmas (Partner)
- 1 Thruster (135#)
- 2 Squat Clean (135#)
- 3 Overhead Squat (135#)
- 4 Power Snatch (135#)
- 5 Clean and Jerk (135#)
- 6 Deadlifts (135#)
- 7 Burpees
- 8 Box Jumps (24″)
- 9 Toes to Bar
- 10 Kettlebell Swings (53#)
- 11 Wall ball (30#, 10′)
- 12 Bar Muscle-ups
The team can split the reps up however they wanted. The format follows the song, so the team is responsible for 1 thruster, then 2 cleans + 1 thruster, then 3 OHS + 2 cleans + 1 thruster, and so on.
I worked with Casey. Splitting things up in those first few rounds is a little confusing, but we fell into a pattern after round 5 I think. At that point Casey would start the new movement each round so we’d get the opposite movements we did the last round. We alternated the non-barbell work every movement. The exception was the bar muscle-up where he did 3, I did 6, and he did 3, so then I could get over to the wall ball. On the barbell, one person did the deadlifts and C&J, the next did the snatches and OHS, and back to the other who did the cleans and thruster. Worked out well and was just enough rest to be able to keep going when it was your turn to work. Took us 22:22 and today happens to be the 22nd!
My sore lats are almost gone. In time for 75 pull-ups today!
- 10 PVC Passes
- 10 Air Squats
- 4x Run (60′)
Just a slog of a workout with no rest for the shoulders. I decided to put wrist wraps on in addition to grips. I should have put the wraps over the grips because the opposite way didn’t work worth a shit. Also didn’t use the finger holes in the grips because of the overhead squats Did the first round of OHS unbroken and wasn’t doing that again, so I went 8-7 and then 3 rounds of 9-6. Pull-ups were 3×5 every round and all butterfly kips. Didn’t have as much pop in my hips due to fatigue from the squats. Finished in 11:46.
Didn’t need much warm-up after 70 squats. A month and a half ago I did 3x5x235, which was “tough but ok” and Wodify said I should use like 201-215 based on the recommended 70-75% of my estimated max. I think my estimated max is a little higher because I had a squat session at home, so I settled on 225 to keep my progress going. My legs seemed to wake up after the first working set.
Was a nice day yesterday so I went golfing. Went to the 4pm class today.
- Crossover Symmetry Activation
- 400m Run
- 3 Rounds
- 10 PVC Pass Throughs
- 5/5 Single Arm Dumbbell Overhead Squat (25#)
- 5 Sotts Press (PVC)
Warmed up with 45-75-95-115#. Wasn’t sure how my shoulder would feel and didn’t have any pain!
- Squat Snatch + 2 OHS (135#)
Felt great actually! Seemed like I was easily diving under the bar and stability felt just fine. Big difference compared to a month or two ago when I was failing 135# squat snatches because it hurt to catch.
2018 Team Series Event 6 – 2 Rounds (w/ partner)
- 100 cal Row (switch every 25 cals)
- 50 Handstand Push-ups
Paired up with Tom and I went first. We crushed the rows. Went 15-10 HSPU in the first round and then 10-10-5 in round two. Finished in 13:22.
It started pouring, but was only a small cloud so I stuck around and did Crossover Symmetry Recovery. Going to try to get this in more often so I can hopefully get back up on the rings and back to butterfly pull-ups.
